Girls on Bikes – This Is NOT What We Mean

It’s funny and yet not so hilarious that Girlsonbikes.com is a porn site. Lots of girls, no bikes.

These two voluptuous women above, by the artist INSA, aren’t from Girlsonbikes.com, nor are they what I mean when I refer to Girls on Bikes. In fact, I’m not sure what they are – bike porn to adorn INSA’s graffiti, or vice versa. But INSA will get a lot more hits to his site than I will to mine.

Beauty is intrinsically pleasant to humans male and female. And what could be better than having it ride by you on a city street? Yet girls on bikes may suffer from the difficulty of drawing some hard line between appreciation of beauty, and titillation.

That may be why DL Byron at BikeHugger says women with mud on their faces, muscling their way into the traditionally male domain of cyclocross and also commuting to work by bike “are doing more for the cause” of cycling than Cycle Chic can.

Of course I disagree, at the same time that I fervently admire people like my neighbor Leslie Carlson, who took up cyclocross in her 40s and is loving it.

I don’t even want to see bike transportation as a cause, but rather as a solution and a pleasure. If you look out at the vast and wonderful world of  women bike bloggers, as Barb Chamberlin did recently, you’ll see that we are so much more numerous and diverse than the rest of the bike world may have yet realized.

We have to begin to capitalize on that, somehow.
